Making a turned heel
So, I am making a pair of socks, and loosely following the instructions given in silver's sock class., only I have 8 more stitches than the pattern calls for. I did the first row of turning the heel, p20, p2together, p1, turn. The next part of the instructions read as follows:

Slip the first stitch (from the stitches you just purled, not the stitches left on the right needle).
Knit 5 stitches.
Knit the next 2 together. (See pic and instructions below.)
Knit one more stitch.
Turn your work.

And so on. Given that my heel has 4 more stitches than the instructions call for, how many stitches should I knit in this second row?

Instructions are here http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Heel2.htm

What would be a good scarf pattern for yarn like this (goes from thick to thin)?
http://www.lionbrand.com/yarns/woolspun.htm

I've tried a few different things, but the patterns just get lost in the yarn. I've also tried stockinette, which looks okay, but I'd prefer to do something more interesting.

Oh & I'm looking for something free and posted online please.

Lace Lifeline
I'm currently working on the Flower Basket Shawl and have a lifeline question. Basically, it comes down to this: unwaxed dental floss is darned near impossible to find where I am. And I have a feeling I might have left the floss I was using at relatives the last time I worked on the shawl. (And it was the last pack at the store where I found it.)

I've been putting off continuing on the shawl until I find more. Except I was looking through the latest Knit Picks catalog and there they suggested using waxed dental floss. Oh, the possibilities! Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Target, the supermarket, they all have waxed dental floss. (That said, the minty flavored waxed options still far outnumbers plain waxed, but I draw the line at my lace being minty fresh.)

Only I'm not certain where I got it in my head that unwaxed was better. But it kinda makes sense to me, though that doesn't mean it's right. Has anyone here used waxed dental floss for lifelines? Or what else have you used? (I'm considering heavy duty sewing thread as another option.)

Pretty Bamboo socks!
hi all,

I've been pattern-less random sock-making again.
I bought some Wendy brand "Happy" bamboo/acrylic yarn on holiday a few weeks back, and it was great to work with. Aquarius colourway is also very pretty :)

thoughts? suggestions?
hi knitters!

so i am one of those people who rarely finishes making anything for herself, but i am always making things for other people. maybe it's because the deadlines are so firm for gifts, and i end up putting things for myself on the backburner, or maybe it's because i have really bad luck and tend to goof on everything i attempt to make just for me.

with that in mind, and being as i just finsihed a beautiful stole for my mother [and i will post pics, but just not right now!], i was thinking about making myself a cardigan. something that i can hopefully wear in the summertime [but not necessarily] like over a tank top for modesty. anyway, i think i've narrowed it down to two options, but i'm always open to suggestions. i'd like to hear your opinions [if you have any]... now i'd really love to finish this one, so if one of them looks stupidly impossible, then yes, that will rule it out.

and wthout further ado, there they are:
1) Tangled Yoke Cardigan from Interweave Knits Fall 2007
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tangled-yoke-cardigan

2) Tailored Cardigan by DROPS design
http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/visoppskrift.php?d_nr=97&d_id=18&lang=en

just to give youo an idea of what i like about these: they're both a decently fine-textured yarn [for a sweater anyway], both fit pretty closely, and both of them are pretty... simple in execution? i don't like clothing that's too fussy, so that's important to me.

anyway, thanks in advance for any advice/guidance! i really hope to buy the yarn asap as i'm really excited to make something for myself! and of course, yarn suggestions/no-nos are welcome.

Hi there,
I just finished a pair of socks for my step-granddaughter. =) I used Red Heart's Heart& Sole yarn in 'Watercolor Stripe'. The pattern was 'Most Basic Kid's Sock from Ravelry.com .

Right, so you lot have held my hand through this armwarmer fiasco. I thank you. :)

I’ve come down to where I need to make increases for the thumb, but I’m a bit lost as to what the rules are when I’m just making up my own pattern. Is there some sort of (pardon the pun) rule of thumb when it comes to doing this kind of thing? Like increasing until you have X percentage of the whole # of sts?

I went through the tags and came up with this article, and from there this pattern. My arm warmers are 2x2 rib, so it seems perfect to adapt for my own use. Yay! However, I'm back to wondering if there's a general rule of how many sts to set aside for a thumb gusset (not interested in an afterthought thumb, even if it would be a million times easier).

So, er. Thoughts?

ribbing?
Hello so I'm knitting a vest for my husband and I got stuck in the second part of the pattern. I don't understand what this means?:

 Rib 6(4, 4, 6, 5,1)* inc in next st, rib 6(7, 7, 7, 8, 9) rep from * to last 5(3, 3, 7, 5, 0)…. 155(160, 169, 175, 180, 188) sts.

does it mean that I knit and purl 6 (4,...) stitches each and increase one stitch and then rib 6(7,...)? or am I getting it wrong.

Thanks in advance.

Okay, I got an email last night from a friend asking me if I knew of any good patterns for knitted stuffed animals. He doesn't have any specific species in mind, thank god - just the condition that the pattern is for an animal that's at least big enough for a young child to carry around with them. I've already suggested the Pond Alligator.

Any other favorite stuffie patterns I could give as suggestions? Preferably ones that are knit in pieces and then stuffed/seamed afterwards, since that technique seems like it would be easier, but any patterns you know of would be appreciated.

Wool in the dryer without felting?
We have a terrible situation in our apartment: bed bugs.  Luckily we've caught it early, but we still are going through the process of treating all our clothes and linens.  The best way to kill the little buggers?  Throw your clean, dry clothes in a hot dryer so they reach a sustained temp of over 120 degrees for at least five minutes.

Now, I would never, ever, ever put my wool in the dryer unless I'm intending to felt, but I have to ask if the same rule holds true for wool with completely dry fibers.  If I can safely expose them to the heat (I'm guessing about 5 minutes to get hot enough and another 5 minutes to stay at that temp for a total of 10 minutes of hot, dry tumbling) without fear of felting I would love to handle the situation that way rather than have to get every wool item I own dry cleaned.  That would be unbearably expensive.

Thanks for your wisdom.

Need help converting EZ Feb Baby Sweater
Hello!

I'm knitting Elizabeth Zimmerman's February Baby Sweater, and would like to do the sleeves in the round after knitting the body.

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding the original instructions (maybe partly because the copy I made to travel with is quite blurred near the end of each line). I understand that on the 2 needle method, an extra lace pattern repeat is cast on for either side of each sleeve. What is meant by "knitting up 4x7 sts at the cast-on sleeve-sts"?.

Am I fine just placing the original sleeve sts on temporary holders, then knitting back and forth on the 92 body sts, then creating an extra 14 sts for each sleeve when I go to knit them in the round?

Thanks.

Looking for a pattern
There was this really spectacular pattern posted here a while ago, and I'm having trouble retrieving it.
It was I believe a cabled earflap hat, and it may have had a scarf with it..Though I don't care about the scarf. The pictures showed it was knit with a chunky olive green yarn...
If anyone has it saved or knows where it is, please let me know!

a bunch of FOs: hats! And a pair of socks.
Even though I feel like I often finish something, I always have so many works in progress! But I guess it's nice to have something to choose from. These are all small - after I finished my latest sweater I've had to recover with small patterns that only take 50-100 grams of yarn. :) my latest under the cut! )

Really Dumb question time
So, when knitting a swatch to check gauge, is the stitches per inch based on the swatch if it's laying flat, or if you stretch it out?

Awesome yarn score!
I can't take pics (camera work)right now, but I found yarn-y awesomeness at the thrift store today and I had to share! First up: 4 whole skeins (3 still un-touched, one balled) of chunky weight Misti Alpaca (100% baby alpaca fiber) in a nice dusty pink color. they were $1.99 for all 4 skeins!!!!! I am thinking a sweater, or awesome slipper socks...
Next up: 4 skeins of MANOS cottons stria yarn, which is pure Peruvian cotton (hand dyed, hand spun. I'm not sure how much there is, I have 4 labels, one yarn-shop ball, remnants from 3 ball and two sweater sleeves. This stuff is fairly light weight. I'm thinking socks for this, I don't think there's enough to complete a sweater (hence it's half-finished presence at the thrift shop). I will recycle the sleeves. It's also a dusty pink color. I may try arm-warmers for my sister in this stuff. This was $2.50 for all of it.
Also: 2 skeins of chuncky weight pink and white (plied together) 100% shetland wool One was $.75 the other was $1 (one's pretty tangled)
Last: 2 skeins of light weight 100% mohair in black. $1

All in all it was a good day for my stash. $7.50 on yarn and got nicer yarn than I usually get to use! There was also tons of that ribbon yarn stuff, originally priced at 8.50 a skein, but I really don't like knitting that stuff, so I left it there for someone else to find!

storage?
How do you store your yarn?  Currently, I have every in either plastic bags or milk crates scattered around the apartment and am looking to get a little more organized.  I'm interested in hearing how (and why) you store your yarn.  Sealed containers?  Open air?  In sealed bags in open containers?  By fiber content?  By project?

I've got one of those 4 "cube" bookcases as yet unbuilt and was thinking about getting the canvas squares to put in them.  Can you think of any reason this isn't a good idea?

(I just went to pick up my skein of seasilk which, through some stash rummaging last night, ended up stuck to some Lopi...  Organizing has just taken on new priority...)

Superwash Wool
I'm planning on knitting the Curlicue Coverlet for my new nephew. I would like to do it in a superwash wool since I am already knitting him a summer blanket out of corn. I haven't worked with a lot of superwash so I am looking for recommendations.

I've used KnitPicks Swish, which is super soft but I find it pills like mad when you machine wash and dry. also, they seem to have a much smaller color selection now.

I've also used Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted, which I love, but at $20 a skein, a blanket is going to get pricey quickly. Also looking at Dream in Color.

I would love to hear how Cascade 220 Superwash is from anyone who's used it. I felt a knitted sample in the store and it was rather rough, I was wondering if it gets much softer after a good wash and dry and if it has the same pilling issue as KnitPicks Swish.

Thanks!!

Any help would be great, thank you.

Gloves and hat!
hi all,

I have a few recent projects to share - fingerless gloves for a family member, and a hat for a friend's Mum (she has been kind enough to give me lots of yarn recently for free - so some of the yarn she gave most recently has resulted in a little hat I was able to give to her!)
